Chapter Eighteen
Edmund Giltrap was feeling very uncomfortable. He was sitting in an office with a senior member of the Internal Audit team, who was asking some very probing questions about John McKenna’s activities.
“So, you’re telling me that this young fella, barely a wet week in the bank, had free-go-the-road with billions of our most valued clients’ money. Is that it?” the man said.
“No, not at all. There are several controls in place to ensure that nothing untoward happens, and your own team have audited us just last year and found everything in order. Well, more or less, anyway.”
The man thumbed through the thick file that he had in front of him.
“Yes, I see it here. I wouldn’t agree, Mr Giltrap. There were several non-compliance issues raised in our report. Why, it even says here in audit point 7.2 (a) ‘there is no evidence that sufficient attention has been paid to the principle of four eyes on every transaction’. Isn’t that right?”
“Yes, but it doesn’t say that there is any actual evidence of anything out of the ordinary either. Typical Internal Audit speak for everything’s fine.”
“I don’t think, Mr Giltrap, that it would be wise for you to continue with that attitude under the circumstances. It’s clear that McKenna was up to no good, and I intend to discover just exactly what he was doing, and how he managed to syphon off tens of thousands of euro under your beady eye. Unless, of course, you knew about it all along.”
“That’s an outrageous suggestion! How dare you. My reputation here in the bank speaks for itself, and I won’t have you besmirch it, do you hear?” Giltrap said.
The internal auditor remained silent for a few moments.
“Well – a bank official brutally murdered. Piles of money missing, or unaccounted for. We’re not talking about the theft of a few postage stamps or some office stationery here, Mr Giltrap. This is a serious business, and I expect your full co-operation as we start to investigate. Is that clearly understood?”
“Yes, of course. I’m as anxious to get to the bottom of this as you are, believe me.”
The interview went on in the same vein for another ten minutes. When it was over, Giltrap went to the tea station at the end of the large open plan and made himself a strong cup of coffee. He had some thinking to do.
He recognised that he was between a rock and a hard place. Internal Audit were no pussycats, and had seen off a few of Giltrap’s own colleagues over the years for very minor deviations from their ridiculous rules. Their hypocritical mantra ‘We are here to support the business’ was nonsense, and everyone knew it. But he knew the Gardaí weren’t much better. That Inspector Burke was no fool, and he was getting far too close for Giltrap’s liking. He had a choice to make, and it wasn’t an easy one.

Moore knocked on her boss’s open door when she got back to the station.
“Come in, Fiona.
